Can You Add a Battery to an Existing Solar System?

Yes. If you already have solar panels and an inverter, an AC-coupled battery adds storage and backup without rewiring your array. Here is how it works in South Africa.

Can You Add a Battery to an Existing Solar System?

The short answer

Yes. If your home already has solar panels and an inverter, you can add a battery without tearing out what you have. The simplest route is an AC-coupled battery, which connects to your existing system over the AC side, stores surplus solar and cheaper off-peak power, and gives you backup, all without rewiring your panels.

Why so many South African homes need this

A large share of the rooftop solar installed in South Africa went in without a battery. Those systems cut daytime grid use, but the moment the sun drops or the grid goes down, there is nothing stored to fall back on. Adding storage is the natural next step, and it is usually far simpler than the original solar install.

Hybrid vs AC-coupled, briefly

  • A hybrid battery connects your panels directly to the battery unit. It suits a new system, or a rebuild where you are changing the inverter anyway.
  • An AC-coupled battery leaves your existing solar and inverter in place and couples on over AC. It suits a home that already has solar and just wants to add storage.

For a retrofit, AC-coupled is almost always the right answer, because it avoids re-cabling the array and lets you keep the inverter you already paid for.

How Sunpura does it

Sunpura’s AC-coupled range is built for exactly this:

  • S2400 AC: 2.4 kWh, the compact way to add storage and backup.
  • S6000 AC Pro: 6 kWh with 3,500 W output, for larger homes.
  • U8000 AC: 8 kWh in one unit, with EV-grade semi-solid cells.

Each uses a dual-CT meter that reads your existing inverter, so the system understands what your home produces and uses and manages storage intelligently around it. A larger S4800 AC joins the range shortly.

What to check before you retrofit

  • Your existing inverter and solar size: your installer confirms compatibility and how much storage makes sense.
  • The loads you want to back up: lights, Wi-Fi, a fridge and a few essentials need far less than the whole house.
  • Room to expand: Sunpura AC-coupled units stack and parallel, so you can start modest and grow.

Compliance note: any storage added to a grid-connected home must meet South African safety and grid-connection requirements. Sunpura’s South African NRCS and NRS 097-2-1 compliance is being completed as part of our market entry, and your installer handles the local Certificate of Compliance.

FAQ

Will an AC-coupled battery work with my brand of inverter? In most cases, yes, that is the point of AC coupling. Your installer confirms it against your specific setup.

Do I lose my existing solar warranty? No. AC coupling adds a battery alongside your system rather than replacing components, so your existing equipment and its warranty stay as they are.

How much storage do I need? Enough to cover your evening and essential loads. See the tariff and payback guide for how to think about it, or ask us.
